1. First Impressions

Snapchat pioneered the ephemeral messaging format, where photos and videos disappear after being viewed. While other platforms have copied its features, Snapchat has continued to evolve with augmented reality filters, a Discover section for content, Snap Map, and Spotlight for short videos. It remains especially popular among teenagers and young adults who appreciate its casual, disappearing-content approach to communication.

The app can feel confusing to new users at first, as the layout is not as intuitive as some other apps. But once you get past the learning curve, Snapchat has a distinct and fun communication style that its users love.

2. What Snapchat Does Well

Disappearing content keeps it casual. The core concept of Snapchat, that snaps disappear after viewing, creates a different social dynamic than permanent posts. It encourages more spontaneous, genuine communication without the pressure of creating a permanent record.

AR filters and lenses. Snapchat’s augmented reality filters are among the best and most fun available on any platform. From face transformations to interactive games, the lenses add a creative dimension to messaging.

Streak system drives engagement. Snapchat Streaks, which track consecutive days of snapping with a friend, are a simple but effective engagement mechanism that many users find motivating for staying in touch with specific people.

Snap Map for location sharing. The Snap Map feature lets you share your location with selected friends, which can be useful for meetups or seeing where friends are hanging out.

3. Where Snapchat Could Be Better

Interface can be confusing. Snapchat’s layout has been criticized for being unintuitive, particularly for new users. Navigating between stories, messages, the camera, and Discover is not as obvious as it should be.

Content in Discover can be low quality. The Discover section, which surfaces content from publishers and creators, is often criticized for clickbait-heavy content that does not match the quality users expect.

Less dominant among older users. Snapchat’s user base skews young, and many people in their late 20s and older have migrated to other platforms. If your friends are not on Snapchat, the app loses most of its value.
