1. First Impressions
Telegram is a cloud-based messaging app that has built a reputation for being fast, feature-rich, and privacy-conscious, at least relative to mainstream alternatives like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. It supports text, voice, and video messaging, large file sharing, channels, bots, and communities, making it one of the most versatile messaging platforms available. If you want a messaging app that can do more than the basics, Telegram is worth your attention.
The app is clean and well-designed. Switching between chats, channels, and groups is easy. New users familiar with other messaging apps will find the learning curve minimal for everyday use, though some of the more advanced features take time to discover.
2. What Telegram Does Well
Large group and channel support. Telegram supports groups with up to 200,000 members and broadcast channels with unlimited followers. This makes it popular for large communities, news channels, and content creators who want to reach their audience directly.
Large file sharing. You can send files up to 2 GB in size through Telegram, far exceeding the limits of most other messaging apps. This is genuinely useful for sharing documents, videos, and other large files.
Secret chats with end-to-end encryption. Telegram’s Secret Chat feature offers end-to-end encryption with self-destructing messages. Note that regular Telegram chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted by default, only Secret Chats are.
