Venmo Review: The Social Way to Split and Send Money

Review by Norris Sensei

1. First Impressions

Venmo is one of the most popular ways to send and receive money among friends in the United States. Owned by PayPal, it combines the practicality of a payment app with a social feed where you can see transactions between your friends. It has become the default way many people split bills, pay rent, and send money in casual social situations.

The app is easy to learn and use. If someone asks you to Venmo them, you can download the app, link your bank account, and send money in a few minutes. The social element is optional, but it gives Venmo a distinctive character compared to other payment apps.

2. What Venmo Does Well

Simple and fast payments. Sending money to a friend takes seconds. You find their username, enter an amount and a note, and hit pay. It is genuinely one of the quickest ways to split a bill or pay someone back.

Social feed feature. Venmo’s social feed shows your friends’ transactions (without the amounts). This makes payments feel more casual and fun, and it is useful for seeing that someone has already paid without needing to ask.

Business payments accepted. Many small businesses, market vendors, and freelancers accept Venmo, making it useful beyond just friend-to-friend payments.

Venmo debit card. You can get a Venmo debit card that lets you spend your Venmo balance at any store that accepts Mastercard. This adds real-world utility to your Venmo balance.

3. Where Venmo Could Be Better

Privacy settings can be confusing. By default, Venmo transactions are visible to your friends (though not the amounts). New users sometimes do not realize this and share more than they intended. Privacy settings can be adjusted but require deliberate setup.

No buyer protection for goods and services in the standard version. Regular Venmo payments between friends offer no protection if something goes wrong. The business payment option has some protections but fees apply.

US only. Venmo only works in the United States, limiting its usefulness for anyone who needs to send money internationally.

Criteria Norris Sensei Rating's
Ease of Use (UX/UI) 5
Social Features 4.5
Privacy Controls 3.5
Overall Value 4.5

Final Word:

Venmo is the easiest and most socially integrated way to handle money between friends in the US. Its simplicity, speed, and social features make it the go-to choice for splitting bills and casual payments. The main things to be aware of are the privacy defaults and the lack of buyer protection for regular person-to-person payments.

AppNorris Verdict: Highly recommended for anyone who regularly splits bills or sends money to friends in the US.

Great app for quick payments. The interface is clean, and I like being able to add notes to every transaction. It’s become my default app when I need to pay someone back fast.

Really convenient for everyday transfers. I use it to pay rent, share groceries, and send money to family. Occasionally the bank transfers take a bit longer, but overall it’s super reliable and easy to use.
