Uber app not working? Here are the fixes that actually solve the problem
The worst time to discover your Uber app has a problem is when you're standing outside needing a ride. Most issues with the Uber app are fixable in under two minutes, but they're not always obvious. Here's a practical guide to the most common problems and what actually resolves them, ordered from the fastest fix to the more involved ones.
The app won't open or keeps crashing
This is usually a memory or cache issue on your phone, not something wrong with your Uber account.
On iPhone: double-tap the home button or swipe up from the bottom (depending on your model) to see the app switcher. Find Uber and swipe it up to fully close it. Then tap the Uber icon to reopen it from scratch.
On Android: tap the Recent Apps button (usually a square or three-line icon), find Uber, and swipe it away. Reopen the app.
If closing and reopening doesn't fix it, try clearing the app cache. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, Uber, Storage, and tap "Clear Cache." On iPhone, you can't clear app cache directly without uninstalling, so skip to the next step.
If the app still won't open after clearing cache, uninstall it and reinstall from the App Store or Google Play. Your account data is saved on Uber's servers, so reinstalling doesn't affect your payment methods, ride history, or account.
The app opens but won't load the map
This is almost always a location permission issue or a network problem.
First check your connection: open your phone's browser and load any website. If the browser also won't load, your internet connection is the problem, not Uber. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data to see if that helps.
If your internet works but Uber's map is blank or spinning, check location permissions. On iOS: Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, Uber — set to "While Using the App" or "Always." On Android: Settings, Apps, Uber, Permissions, Location — set to "Allow only while using the app" or "Allow all the time."
If permissions are correct and the map still won't load, it may be a temporary issue on Uber's end. Check Uber's Twitter or X account (@Uber_Support) for any service outage announcements.
Can't request a ride — the "Request" button is grayed out or missing
This usually means one of three things: your payment method has an issue, Uber doesn't have coverage in your current location, or there's a temporary hold on your account.
Check your payment method first. Open the app menu, go to Wallet, and verify your card is still listed and shows no error. If a card was declined on a previous trip, Uber may have placed a temporary hold. Add a new payment method and try again.
If payment looks fine, zoom out on the map and check where you are. If you're in a low-coverage area, the app may not show available drivers. Moving to a busier location, even a few blocks closer to a commercial area, can make drivers available.
If you see a message about your account being on hold, you'll need to contact Uber Support through the Help section of the app to resolve it.
Driver accepted the ride but the tracking isn't updating
GPS tracking can sometimes get stuck or lag behind the driver's actual position. The most common fix is to close the app and reopen it while keeping the ride active. The driver's position should update when the app reconnects.
If you can see the driver has accepted but they seem to not be moving toward you, use the in-app contact button to message them. This often reveals a routing issue where the driver received an incorrect pickup pin and is heading to the wrong spot.
Check your pickup pin carefully every time you request a ride. The app places the pin based on your GPS location, which isn't always precise inside buildings or near address boundaries. If the pin is at an intersection or on the wrong side of a building, drag it to the correct location before confirming your request.
Uber says "no cars available"
This isn't a technical problem with the app — it means there are genuinely no Uber drivers in your immediate area or all nearby drivers are busy.
Options that actually help:
Wait 5 to 10 minutes and try again. Driver availability fluctuates, and a driver may finish a nearby trip and become available.
Move to a busier location. If you're in a residential area, walking to a commercial street or main road often brings available drivers into your range.
Check Lyft. Both platforms have separate driver pools. If Uber shows no cars, Lyft may have drivers available near you. This is especially useful in smaller cities or during unusual hours.
Try a different ride type. If UberX shows no availability, sometimes UberXL or Uber Comfort have available drivers because different drivers sign up for different vehicle categories.
For late-night rides in suburban areas, "no cars available" is unfortunately sometimes the honest truth. Driver supply drops significantly after midnight in areas without active nightlife. Planning a ride in advance using Uber's scheduled ride feature prevents this problem for trips you know about ahead of time.
Payment issues and unexpected charges
If Uber charged you more than the upfront estimate, there are a few explanations. Surge pricing may have increased after you requested but before you confirmed, or the route was significantly longer than expected. Uber's upfront pricing usually holds unless the driver takes a clearly different route, you change your destination mid-ride, or there are waiting time charges.
If you believe a charge is wrong, go to the Help section in the app, select "Trip Issues and Refunds," find the specific trip, and submit a dispute. Uber's support team responds within 24 to 48 hours.
If you see a charge you don't recognize at all, it may be a pending authorization hold rather than an actual charge. Uber places a small authorization hold when you request a ride, which disappears if no ride is taken. These sometimes show up temporarily on your bank statement and then drop off. If an unfamiliar charge persists for more than 48 hours, contact Uber Support.
The driver can't find me
This comes up more often in places with complex addresses: large apartment complexes, multi-building office campuses, hotels with multiple entrances, and convention centers.
The best fix is proactive: when you request a ride, add a note to the driver in the app describing where you are. Something like "waiting at the north entrance by the fountain" or "in front of building 3, not building 1" avoids the confusion. You can also send the driver a message after they accept using the in-app chat.
At airports, always check the app for the designated rideshare pickup zone rather than standing at the general curbside. Airports typically have separate zones for rideshare, taxis, and shuttles, and drivers can only pick up in the correct zone.
App running slowly on an older phone
Uber's app has grown significantly in size and complexity over the years. If you're using a phone that's more than 4 or 5 years old, the app may run slowly, particularly when loading the map.
The practical fix is keeping the app updated, since newer versions are often more efficient than older ones. You can also close other apps running in the background before opening Uber, which frees up memory.
If the app is consistently unusable on your device, the Uber mobile website (m.uber.com) can sometimes be faster for basic ride requests on lower-powered devices.
When to contact Uber Support
For issues that can't be resolved by the fixes above, Uber Support is accessible through the Help section inside the app. Go to your account menu, tap "Help," and navigate to the issue category. Uber doesn't offer phone support by default, but in-app chat and email support are available.
Response times are typically a few hours for non-urgent issues. For safety concerns or active situations, the in-app emergency button connects to 911 directly.
